If you’re preparing to renovate or recovering from a fire, flood, or other damage to your residence, there may be a chance that the older construction materials in your property that need to be replaced contain asbestos, a mineral fiber that can be hazardous to your health if released into the air. But does homeowners insurance cover asbestos removal? Asbestos is a fibrous mineral found in rock and soil. These tiny, long, thin fibers are strong and resistant to heat and corrosion, making them an effective additive in construction materials used to build homes decades ago. Left undisturbed, asbestos typically poses no health hazard. But if older building materials are removed, such as during demolition or renovation, asbestos fibers can become airborne and pose a serious health risk if inhaled.
